A Silk-Based Skin Spray, Cleared as a Device
FDA's 510(k) record places New Day Skin Spray in a prescription-device pathway for managing dry skin and atopic dermatitis. Its silk material serves a barrier-forming product role, not proof of a new drug effect.
The material has a different job
New Day Skin Spray received an FDA 510(k) substantial-equivalence decision in January 2026. Its FDA record describes a prescription skin emulsion for managing skin dryness and atopic dermatitis and maintaining a moist skin or wound environment. The device classification is “Dressing, Wound, Drug”; the record also marks it as a combination product. This is device clearance through a predicate pathway, not approval of a new medicine. [1, 2]
The FDA summary lists silk fibroin among the ingredients and describes a breathable layer formed on the skin. In an August launch announcement, Evolved By Nature calls its input a “soluble silk fibroin peptide.” These are two source-specific descriptions of the material; the company’s peptide language should not be presented as an FDA finding. Here the formulation’s stated role is barrier protection and moisturization, rather than delivery of a named therapeutic payload into tissue. [2, 3]
Clearance answers a defined question
The FDA summary describes formulation, batch-consistency, microbiological and biocompatibility testing. It does not present a randomized clinical comparison showing superiority to existing atopic dermatitis treatments. The January clearance and the company’s August market announcement are separate events. [1, 2, 3]
For product developers, the useful distinction is between a material’s name and its actual job in the finished product. A silk-based surface barrier must be judged by its defined use, device performance and tolerability. Evidence for a different delivery claim would require a different test plan.
